Judgment is a single-player, beat ’em up action-adventure role-playing game developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and published by SEGA. The Japanese version of the game was released on December 13, 2018 and March 13, 2019 in Japan for the PlayStation 4. The English version was released on June 25, 2021 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam. The Remastered English version will be released on April 23, 2021 for the Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, and Google Stadia.

Judgment, also known as Judge Eyes: Shinigami no Yuigon (ジャッジアイズ: 死神の遺言), is a single-player, beat ’em up action-adventure and role-playing game developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. The developer is also known for their other titles such as the Yakuza series, Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD.

Judgment is a spin-off title of the Yakuza series and takes place in the same world. The game shares the similar beats to Yakuza games, with the exception of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, in terms of battle system. Judgment will offer both Japanese and English audio to the player.

Story

Judgment is set at Kamurocho, a fictional Tokyo district, and focuses on the story of a new protagonist. The new main character is Takayuki Yagami, a former lawyer turned private detective.

The game starts with Yagami seeking redemption in a world rife with corruption and despair. While doing odd jobs and evidence collection for his small detective agency, Yagami will be drawn to a cases related to his past. He believes that pursuing these serial murder cases will emancipate him from his previous failures.

Gameplay

Judgment shares similar gameplay from Yakuza games while introducing new systems as well. Here is a breakdown of some gameplay systems in Judgement:

Battle System

Judgment’s combat system shares similarities with Yakuza 0. Players can change Yagami’s fighting style between Crane-style and Tiger-style. Crane-style is focused on fighting groups of enemies while Tiger-style centers on fighting individual enemies.

Side Cases

In addition to main story chapters, the game also features small-scale storylines similar to Substories in Yakuza games. In Judgment, they are called Side Cases where Yagami can sign-up for. Side Cases can be found from noticeboards in Yagami Detective Agency, Genda Law Office, Bar Tender, or by the streets of Kamurocho. The player is rewarded with bonus character experience and item rewards when accomplishing Side Cases.

Investigation Mode

The Investigation Mode is new feature unique to Judgment. In order to progress through the main story and solve some Side Cases, Yagami must search for clues and look for evidences. Yagami can perform lock picking as well as use disguises to gather information or find objects of interest. Also, Yagami will pursue suspects in the form of tailing and chase sequences.
